Starting 1 Jul 2006, Mr Nick Noakes has taken over as the Director of CELT. Nick joined HKUST and has been in CELT since January 2001. In July 2003, he took up the post of Associate Director.
Nick's areas of research interest are teaching and learning practices around emerging technologies in higher education, epistemological and cognitive change, and institutional change strategies.

Tak heads the Evaluation and Research team of CELT which focuses on evaluation services and institutional research. Tak has over 13 years of experience working in basic education in Hong Kong as a teacher, an administrator and a researcher. Since 1995, he has been working in the field of teaching development in local tertiary institutes. He has been involved in several major teaching development projects funded by UGC, which include the "Action Learning Project", "Implementation of ESEP", "University-Wide Web-based Course Delivery Platform", and "Continuous Learning and Improvement through Teaching Innovation" projects.
His research interests include theories of student learning, workplace learning, evaluation of institutional effectiveness, on-line teaching evaluation, education assessment, and use of technology in education.
Tak obtained his Bachelor of Science, Certificate in Education, and Master of Education (Test and Measurement) from the University of Hong Kong, and his Graduate Diploma (Computing Studies) from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia. Recently he obtained his PhD from Deakin University, Australia.

The team runs the TA Induction Program and provides back-end support to CELT’s functional teams. The support and services provided by the team range from fielding enquiries, budget administration, logistics arrangement for workshops, seminars and special events, office management, maintaining office supplies, procurement/acquisition, inventory control, administration support for General Education courses and personnel matters to record keeping.

As its title suggests, the responsibilities of the team fall into two related categories, namely evaluation services and institutional research. Evaluation services include course evaluations, project evaluations, and evaluation of workshops and seminars organized by CELT. As for institutional research, the main focus will be on student learning and teaching in HKUST. The team will plan to collect empirical data about how students in HKUST learn. It is hoped that such information will be useful to faculty and instructors in planning their teaching.

The team has two areas of work to promote professional development for teaching staff and postgraduate students at HKUST. The team develops and conducts professional development programs for teaching staff (both faculty and non-faculty) including faculty orientation, workshops and seminars on educational topics and teacher training. The team also delivers training for the postgraduate students through the Teaching Assistant (TA) program and professional development program for Research postgraduates (RPG).

The team promotes the adoption of instructionally sounded technologies in learning and teaching at HKUST. We support faculty and teaching staff in their teaching efforts through the followings:
- to explore and promote emerging technologies for learning and teaching
- to collaborate with teaching staff in formulating eLearning or blended learning strategies and developing eLearning solutions/content to support these strategies.
- to provide instructional development support and evaluation for institutionally funded Teaching Development Projects.
- to organize and deliver seminars/workshops on innovative eLearning ideas, pedagogies, platform and tools.
- to provide usage support on the eLearning platform and tools currently in use.
- to maintain the institutional archive of HKUST's teaching and learning activities and instructional design methods on this website.
