Professor Tai Kai Ng from Physics Department, who is actively involved in improving the Physics curriculum design in schools, gave a presentation on the recent progress of the Hong Kong Education Reform. He discussed the challenges that universities are facing with the new enrollments of students as a result of the Reform.

Project based learning is one of the instructional strategies that Ng uses in his course designs. Following Ng's presentation, Mrs. Mei Fang demonstrated course examples in UST that are project based. Professor Ng also took questions from the audience in an open discussion.

  Hong Kong's Education Reform
Hong Kong's education reform started in early 1988, with an education review conducted by the Education Commission (EC). The reform then started to take place in phases, affecting the mainstream education including tertiary education. The focuses have been on the academic structure, the curricula and the assessment mechanism of various stages of education that will ultimately lead to a new culture of learning and teaching.

A range of pedagogical approaches has been used to bring better learning results. Students are now engaged more in conducting projects in their learning, for instance. Based on a given context, they work collaboratively on authentic projects. Some practitioners believe that students are more motivated learning by projects. The following web sites provide conceptual and practical ideas and resources on different instructional approaches that have strong ties to each other.
