Language is powerful and can exclude or include others. Being inclusive is a HKUST core value. It’s important that the language we use in our teaching is inclusive.

Members of the Community for Enhancing Intercultural Learning Experiences, in consultation with faculty in the School of Humanities and Social Science and members of the Diversity and Equal Opportunities Committee (DEOC), have written guidelines for use of inclusive language in the HKUST community. Two versions of these guidelines are available on the DEOC’s website. An abridged version raises awareness and briefly introduces ways of being inclusive in your language use. A lengthier version provides explanations and examples.

At this workshop, the writers will explain the rationale behind the guidelines. They will outline eight ways to make your language use inclusive. They will ask you to think about implementation of the guidelines in your teaching context and discuss challenges associated with their use, as well as ways these challenges might be overcome.
